Your correspondence with Milton Friedman on Hayek is interesting and less academic than your article on Hayek’s Road to Serfdom, which for most people, it is pretty hard to access because of the time investment to read it.
Serfdom was not the original status of the Russian peasant.It was one of the consequences of the Tartar devastation during the 13th century when peasants became homeless and settled on the land of wealthy Russians.
In German history the emancipation of the serfs came in 1770-1830, beginning with Schleswig in 1780. Prussia abolished serfdom with the “October Edict” of 1807, which upgraded the personal legal status of the peasantry and gave them ownership of half or two-thirds of the lands they were working.
Serfdom is the status of many peasants under feudalism, specifically relating to manorialism.It was a condition of bondage, which developed primarily during the High Middle Ages in Europe and lasted in some countries until the mid-19th century.
Biography of Russian Peasants. In 1861 Alexander II issued his Emancipation Manifesto that proposed 17 legislative acts that would free the serfs in Russia. Alexander announced that personal serfdom would be abolished and all peasants would be able to buy land from their landlords.
